Shophouses of Ipoh

Ipoh lies around 200km north of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and straddles the Kinta River which splits Ipoh into what's known as the Old Town and the New Town. The Old Town of Ipoh has some wonderful examples of pre-World War II heritage buildings, Government buildings, colonial buildings and shophouses displaying classic and significant architecture.

A shophouse is a 2 or 3-story building with a kaki-lima or "five-foot-way" on the street front providing an open arcade and walkway. Traditionally the shop is on the ground floor with the residence above, the top floor of the shophouse extending out over the five-foor-way. The shophouses are attached therefore a continuous arcade is created along the street providing an ideal venue for trading or serving food.

The shophouse architecture results from the ingenious design of the builders to cope with the tropical climate. The verandah shaded the front rooms, thick brick walls helped to insulate the rooms from the heat, strategically placed light wells brought light and air into the house and the roof with a raised mini-gable at the peak increased air flow. Shutters and grills on the windows and doors also allowed free circulation of air as well as privacy.

Shophouses in Penang have been built for two hundred years and their unique structures clearly show the influence of the Chinese, Malay and Indian and European styles merged to the local environment. The pillars at the entrance to the shophouses advertise the shop owner with large embossed Chinese characters. One can also see some highly decorated shophouses with stucco figures, ceramic and glass decorations as well as other decorative plasterwork.

Pure Indulgence in Ipoh

Think of food in Ipoh and you think of Ipoh chicken rice, char kway teo, Ipoh hor fun, salt baked chicken and all those great hawker food favourites ..... Think again!

Julie Song opened Indulgence Living & Restaurant which is by far the best western restaurant and boutique hotel in Ipoh, and the food can certainly challenge many of the top restaurants in KL.

Indulgence Living & Restaurant is located in a wonderful old bungalow house designed and personally fitted out by Julie. She is also at the helm in the kitchen producing one of the most interesting and unique menus I have seen for a long time with an extremely interesting blend of Western-Asian dishes.

Accommodation in the hotel comprises 7 themed rooms all nicely appointed and modernized. We stayed in the "Italian" theme room called Giulianna, others include Moroccan, English Country, Thai, Contemporary and Chinoisserie.

Room rates are premium but certainly worth the money for the level of quality and comfort. Service at Indulgence Living is excellent, no doubt led by Julie's attention to detail and flair for understanding what the sophisticated traveller desires.

A highly recommended venue and one I will return to soon and worth the 200km drive from KL.

A stunning starter with Taiwanese mushrooms and avocado

Starter of scallops with mango and cucumber salad

Lamb On The Run - lamb done 4 ways

Breakfast is just as much a gourmet adventure as dinner was with some unique combinations and tastes.

Afternoon Tea

Are you sitting having your afternoon tea? If so have you given any thought to where that tea comes from? This is a view over the Boh Tea Plantation in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia - a wonderful swathe of green bushes cover the rolling hills dotted with the tea plantation workers houses.

The Cameron Highlands sit at more than 5000 ft above sea level in the main mountain range of Malaysia and is one of the most fertile agricultural areas of the country. It's also a wonderful place to escape the hot humidity of the lowlands and the traffic jams of Kuala Lumpur for a few days of cool weather, pleasant scenery and of course .... a nice cuppa tea!

Le Petit Zinc

I was thinking of great food tonight and remembered this wonderful restaurant at 11 Rue St Benoit, Saint Germain district of Paris on the South Bank of the Seine.

Dataran Merdeka

The Dataran Merdeka (or Merdeka Square) is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is situated in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. It was here the Union Flag was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted for the first time at midnight on August 31, 1957. Since then, Dataran Merdeka has been the usual venue for the annual Hari Merdeka Parade (National Day Parade).
Literally Independence Square, it was formerly known as the Selangor Club Padang or simply the "Padang" and was originally the cricket green of the Selangor Club (now Royal Selangor Club).
The Sultan Abdul Samad Building, which grandly overlooks the Dataran Merdeka, is one of the most significant landmarks built by the British. Designed by A. C. Norman who was inspired by Indian Moghul architecture, this building was completed in 1897 and housed the Selangor State Secretariat and later the Supreme Court before being abandoned for a number of years. It now houses the Ministry of Heritage, Culture and Arts.
The Padang was officially renamed Dataran Merdeka on 1 January 1990 in conjunction of Visit Malaysia Year 1990.
On August 31, 2007, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi shouted 'Merdeka!' on midnight celebrations, where thousands of Malaysians celebrated 50 years of nationhood.

Graffiti

Graffiti (singular: graffito; the plural is used as a mass noun) is the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or marked in any manner on property. Graffiti is any type of public markings that may appear in the forms of simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Graffiti has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In modern times, spray paint, normal paint and markers have become the most commonly used materials. In most countries, defacing property with graffiti without the property owner's consent is considered vandalism, which is punishable by law. Sometimes graffiti is employed to communicate social and political messages.

To some, it is an art form worthy of display in galleries and exhibitions; to others it is merely vandalism. Graffiti has since evolved into a pop culture existence often related to underground hip hop music and b-boying creating a lifestyle that remains hidden from the general public. Graffiti is used as a gang signal to mark territory or to serve as an indicator or "tag" for gang-related activity. The controversies that surround graffiti continue to create disagreement amongst city officials/ law enforcement and graffitists looking to display their work in public locations. There are many different types and styles of graffiti and it is a rapidly developing artform whose value is highly contested, being reviled by many authorities while also subject to protection, sometimes within the same jurisdiction.

I came across these great examples of graffiti on an old abandoned building at the bottom of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur.

This art form has livened up the drab run-down walls of the buildings and created a large canvas for young artists to exhibit their creativity and artistic talents.

Return to Guangzhou

It has been around 25 years since I was last in Guangzhou .... and what a change indeed! Arriving at the gigantic Baiyun airport, which seems even bigger than Beijing's impressive new airport, you realise that things have changed significantly here. A fast modern highway takes you right into the centre of the city which has grown both outwards and upwards with some very impressive modern high buildings.

Out on the streets there are now organised pedestrian crossings, traffic overpasses, tunnels, new shopping centres and wide clean sidewalks.

However you can still easily duck down some side streets to discover the old Canton with the traditional foods, classic Chinese architecture and some wonderful street characters.

Deserters Live at Mac+iPod DiscoveryWeek @Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur

The Mac+iPod Discovery Week exhibition held at Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur saw local band Deserters on the centre stage this afternoon.

Also seen was Iskandar Ibrahim, local wedding photographer, in action at the iPhoto booth taking photos of attendees in a special "Star Treck" Captain's chair.

I had the opportunity to present an Aperture talk at lunchtime covering a typical workflow taking RAW images from the camera, keywording, star rating, basic editing and preparation for a variety of media export such as prints, e-mails, books and slideshows. Example books printed by ecazstudios were shown.
